From its inception in the 1880s, The Norfolk & Western Railway primarily carried freight but as a sideline, it always provided passenger service. A profitable, well-run company, N&W only accepted the very best.
As World War II ended, N&W offered several named trains along its main line, including the Cavalier, the Pocahontas, and its daytime flagship the Powhatan Arrow. Pulled initially by the magnificent Class J steam locomotives that N&W manufactured at its Roanoke Shops, the Powhatan Arrow provided fast, luxurious, and memorable service for three decades before passenger service was discontinued, giving way to automobile and airplane travel nationwide.
The corridor traversed by the Powhatan Arrow is a wonderfully complex, geographically fascinating, socially diverse, and economically mixed path through Virginia, West Virginia, and Ohio. The vicissitudes of time have endowed the communities along the way with a broad spectrum of fortunes, branching from prosperity to failure.

As a native of Southwest Virginia familiar with many of the areas discussed in this book, I enjoyed this unique travelogue that follows the route of an elegant passenger train that operated mid-20th century. I enjoyed learning about the mechanics and engineering involved in not only building trains but in building tracks, maintenance and more. I thought the author handled difficult social and economic issues with compassion and honesty while pointing out that there are no easy answers to the complicated state of affairs in the poor communities of Appalachia. His conclusions about the future of transportation were interesting and I look forward to seeing if his predictions come true and how the world will be affected by them.Product details

Would you listen to Chasing the Powhatan Arrow again? Why?
Yes, it embodies a time in the U.S. that is appealing. We worked hard and enjoyed our families, America WAS great. Not just a political slogan.That was the gist of what I got out of the audio book. Americana, travelogue, Railroad, interwoven with personal nostalgia!
What other book might you compare Chasing the Powhatan Arrow to and why?
In the same vein of some of Studs Terkel work. In that it looked at why the rail road in that region meant so much to prosperity, growth, lifestyle, etc.
Have you listened to any of Dave Cruse’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
First that I am aware of. But he did an exceptional job! He seemed to have done his research, has a very good voice, good pronunciation, and in my opinion got across what the author's intention was. That really added to the work overall. Perfect choice!

Not knowing much about trains or train history I approached this book with some trepidation. However, having read his other book The Spine of The Virginia's which I thoroughly enjoyed I was motivated to press on. What I found was a book that was both enjoyable to read and educational about the role of trains in history and how they work (at a level I could at least understand and actually appreciate). The author had obviously done his homework including interviewing many people through his travels that had a direct connection to the 611 from many perspectives resulting in a coherent, informative and just plain interesting book. His travels also afforedd him the opportunity to discuss other topics such as economic changes associated with technology, how some communities adapt to change while others virtually disappear, and the impact of environmental changes on jobs and communities to name a few. Some discussions were not avoided despite their sensitive nature, Most of these topics come out of conversations he has with others while on the road and generally compliment the complex history of the 611. At other times he shares human interest stories that illustrate the goodness in others under even the most difficult circumstances such as when he talks with first responders in a small town in Virginia. Overall an enjoyable, informative and well written book.

Fantastic read, not only from the railroad history perspective, but from a people and regional perspective as well. I was lucky to meet the author in Roanoke a few weeks ago. Super nice gentleman.
Great book for any train buff, especially of the Norfolk and Western
Excellent story of a time when life was simpler. A story of people and their desire to produce the best results in their lives and their work was important. I grew up along the Route of the Powhatan Arrow. MY Grandfather retired as an engineer from the N&W. This book accurately depicts life and the story of a people and their Railroad. Great read and I highly recommend it.
