An amazing journey in search of a work of art that mysteriously disappeared during the Nazi period Over 500,000 copies sold worldwide by the so called ‘Queen of the Spanish Adventure Fiction’, one of the top writers in Spanish language, and author of the bestseller The Last Cato A group of antiquarians are dealing in stolen works of art. The group is hierarchically organized and its members represent the chess pieces. The King (the eldest team member) leads every operation and the Pawn (the main character of the novel) carries out the orders. Ana Galdeano’s next job is finding a unique and exceptional piece, stolen by the Nazi army, which mysteriously disappeared during the final days of World War II. This object is the Amber Salon, an 18th-century room constructed entirely of semitransparent amber from the Baltic. In seeking this magnificent object, Ana finds herself obliged to disentangle the threads of a conspiracy plotted 50 years earlier by two very dangerous Nazi officials. This book has been successfully published in three countries Italy, France and Greece.
Checkmate in Amber Matilde Asensi Books
This book relates a good story with the some of the usual good work of Asensi in grounding the plot in historical fact and real geography. Her physical descriptions of places and European cities remains warm and detailed. She develops some of her main characters well, but hurries their development and misses important links and characteristics in others to help the reader fully understand their importance and relationships. The story within the story (I.e., that of the love affair between the woman heroine and one of her colleagues) is shallow and a bit sophomoric. All of this is made even less palatable by the very poor translation of the book from the original Spanish into English.
All in all, this is far from Asensi's best...at least as it is presented in English. It is as if she got lazy as a writer and fails to fully develop either her characters or her plot. She seems to lack connection to this book and simply wanted to finish it and move on. I would not read anything else translated by the person doing this translation.

Checkmate in Amber Matilde Asensi Books Reviews
The book was easy to read and moved along at a very fast pace. Can't wait to read the next one.
This was definitely a worthwhile airplane or beach read, but doesn't extend much farther than that. The story is compelling, but terse and light on historical facts.
Great story! Very fast paced and interesting.
Matilde Asensi is a great writer. I wish more of her work was translated to English. Loved ... and I highly recommend ... "The Last Cato" as well.
Having just returned from St. Petersburg and viewing the replica of the original Amber Room, I was very interested in reading this book. The facts about the original Amber Room and it's continued disappearance were again interesting and I was able to visualize clearly the goal. The characters, however, were not particularly well developed and the protagonist not particularly appealing. It was a good quick read and an interesting premis.
