This candid book about teaching difficult students caused me to laugh out loud numerous times. I have the dubious honor of being an English teacher as well, and have had many of the same things happen to me in my classroom!! Yes, what Wolf says is true! Glad to know I can laugh about those incidents now. Unlike this author, Wolf Redboy, I still teach. Did I mention I teach students who have their own brand of difficulties? Thanks, Wolf, for this telling of what many classrooms can be like. I've lent this humorous book to one ex-teacher friend (who also taught in Las Vegas for just a little over one year), and another teaching colleague is waiting to read it when we begin our new school year with our own special students next month. This was a lot darker than I thought it would be, and a lot funnier, too. I think if you like Woody Allen mixed with South Park then this will be right up your alley. But if you don't like very dark humor then you will hate this book. I'm reminded of Quentin Tarantino - who said that he wrote "Pulp Fiction" as a comedy, but he was the only one who saw it this way.
What I like about this book is that there are layers upon layers and plot twists and turns, and you never know what to expect. It's a book about the hell of being a teacher for the first half of the book or so and then it takes a dark turn as he meets his stalker. This was when it got very weird and very funny, as the teachers have to battle the stalker together.
I must say the book makes me feel very sorry for teachers today, because the teacher in America is not respected, or at least, we very much get that sense. And I think that's what this book is really about - .
This book reads quick and and funny, but wants to make you cry because the irony is doing the right thing is not always that easy. So this guy gets a job in Nevada, and has no idea what he is stepping into... no where else in the world would such schools be allowed, but in the land of the Sin Cities, the kids of the wackos are the prince and princesses of absurd behavior. This book is a definitive eye opener that will make you laugh and squirm at the same time; worth the price and I look forward to more from Wolf Redboy (I found out about him from his music on iTunes, as he is better known as a musician).
How to Kill an 8th Grade Teacher was a very well written book. At times it was uncomfortable to read, and brought back memories of my own experience in the 8th or 9th grade, but the story kept my interest and I read the entire book in just a couple of days. It was a frustrating time for the character Leo,and some of the students were criminals, but it was also entertaining and funny. I recommend the book .
This is often funny, sometimes heart breaking and well written. I think anyone who attended public school, taught in public school or has/had children in any school should read this.
